December- Meditation and Relaxation space

Mindfulness spaces

Me and Lou have been chatting about tiredness, this year seems different, a tiredness that's different to our usual. Are you feeling the same? With the darkness, bad sleep, stress, and so on, we need a space to visit, hide within, escape to, relax in....space is really important to relaxation, mindfulness and meditation. The space you create for these moments needs to be able to encourage YOU to be calm and at peace.

I have now completed 6 modules of my Meditation Teacher course. I'm learning lots, and its helping to inform my practice also! Something important came up about space, to which I was already engaging in. Yet being aware means I can utilise it even more to my benefit, and also help you!

If you are wanting to practice mindfulness, or meditation or wanting to just 'relax' or switch off, having a space to go to helps signal to the brain that this space is about being calm. How bed is for sleep, your desk is for working and so on. I've read alot about how this space should be 'light, non cluttered...' but to be honest, what calms you may not calm another! The space you create might be 'cluttered' with lights, but if that is soothing to your soul, this is perfect enough as it is. The space can be the corner of a room, a chair, the floor....my own space is the wall by my kitchen door. I place a cushion on the floor, a yoga mat, blanket and some candles.

On the dressing table near by is where I keep my soothing items, lights, candles...its okay if we have small spaces, its okay if nothing seems ideal. We make our spaces ideal. I promise. I switch off my lights, get the cushions and blanket out, switch on the lights on my table, and I'm in a different space. Don't feel you have to keep everything the same either. Pick a little coffee table or a box to keep you items in that you can get out when needed! I've changed my dressing table recently- to be more seasonal! You could change month by month, or with the seasons! Pictures below and to the right show how my space began. Above is how it is.

So, find your spot, if it isn't right, find another, get a mat, a cushion or your favourite chair.

Think about whether lights soothe you or candles. Scents, essential oils, sprays can be useful to hand. Lots of people enjoy incense. You may like things to use for sensory- like touch which is very useful for mindfulness.

Whatever it is find what works for you, don't feel pressured to go for a certain aesthetic. I personally love colour, lights, lots of clutter of candles, to me that's soothing. I would love to see your spaces, however big or small! Happy creating!
